ZERO. Aha Moment

Back in 2010, I had a life-changing realization. Deported from the U.S. to Colombia, I spent six months in Bogota, working a job that left me unhappy. A visiting friend suggested we check out Medellin. That was my “Aha moment.” Upon arriving, I felt an immediate connection. The weather, the people, the culture—the city had everything I needed to be happy. I never went back to Bogota, and if you’ve experienced a similar moment, share it in the comments.

1. Define Your Mission for Medellin Life

Before making the move, defining your vision for life in Medellin is crucial. What would make you happy? Consider where you want to live, your budget, and the type of visa you need. I spend about 30% of my income on living expenses, helping me choose the right neighborhood. Finding your ideal spot is vital whether it’s El Poblado, Laureles, or elsewhere. Also, decide on the type of visa that suits your situation—digital Nomad Visa, student visa, property owner visa, investor visa, or marriage visa. Having a plan is essential before the big move.

2. Exploration

Connect with the expat community in Medellin through Facebook and WhatsApp groups. Ask questions, seek advice, and explore the city virtually. Joining Spanish classes before arrival improves language skills and helps form connections. This exploration phase is critical for gathering information and preparing for the move. Be cautious about whose advice you take, as everyone’s journey is unique. Start making connections before arriving to ease the transition.

3. Decide and Take Action

The decisive moment arrives. Identify and overcome any obstacles holding you back. If budget constraints or job commitments are concerns, address them. Book that one-way flight to Medellin without looking back. This stage is where many people get stuck. Understanding your obstacles is vital to making this decision. If you have questions or obstacles, book a call with me.

4. Reflection

Now, in Medellin, take stock of your feelings. What do you love and dislike about your neighborhood? You’ll have moments of revelation and challenges. Embrace them and start the lifestyle design cycle anew. Reflect, adjust, and move forward. After 13 years here, I’ve realized my love for Medellin. Some people’s journeys differ, but I encourage you to embark on this lifestyle design cycle as you consider the move.
