I’m definitely not a professional foodie, nor is this a food blog, but I do enjoy eating good food. While Medellin is not an international food hotbed it does boast a few great restaurants.
Living near Los Angeles my whole life I have been spoiled with awesome food. I know that Medellin has some great restaurants, some more popular then the others. In my quest to make reading English fun and interesting for you, I also want to make it fun for me. So I’ve decided to write about more personal experiences such as this one.
One of my favorite types of food is Hawaiian Barbecue. We are fortunate to have native Hawaiians, Jerry Wong and his wife here in Medellin. Jerry and his wife (the chef) have opened a new restaurant in Medellin’s Zona Rosa (Medellin’s Hot Spot), Parque Lleras, called Aloha Bar & BBQ.
I went to Aloha for the first time a couple of Saturday’s ago with a friend of mine, Kelia. I didn’t know what to expect from the place, I had read on Trip Adviser that the food was very good. So upon arrival the owner, Jerry, noticed me, greeted us and sat at our table. He recommended we order the Puppo Platter Plus ($25,000) which came with a little bit of everything.
Puppo Plater Plus
- Pulled Pork Sandwich
- BBQ Ribs
- Chicken and Beef Kabobs
- Potato Salad
- Pineapple Coldslaw
To drink we ordered a cocktail called Blue Hawaiian which was very delicious.
Everything on the plate was scrumptious. I’m a loud eater, meaning that I moan, groan, and make comments while eating. Sometimes this can be a bit embarrassing for those accompanying me, but to my surprise my friend was also a loud eater. The stares we got from other patrons were funny. But who can help it when the food tastes sooooooo gooooood!
Both Kelia and I agreed that the best part of the meal were the ribs. They were very tender, cooked medium well, seasoned well, and smothered in homemade barbecue sauce.
Granted that I’m no food critic, nor have I tried all of the BBQ ribs in Medellin, I would have to say that Aloha Bar & BBQ has got to be one of the best rib joints in Medellin.
Aloha Bar & BBQ is located next to Juan Valdez in Parque Lleras. For directions and the menu visit their website: Aloha Bar & BBQ in Medellin, Colombia.
The camera on my phone was not working when I visited so I had to pull the pictures from other places. Referring site listed under the picture.
