Cocktail Party Conversation Club

Last Saturday, June 7th, 2014 at 7:30 p.m. we had our 3rd Conversation Club Cocktail Party.  The event was held at Vertigo Bar on 33rd street, in Laureles.

I arrived at Vertigo at 7:10 p.m. and the weather was terrible.  It was raining cats and dogs.  Having lived in Medellin for over 3 years now, I knew that this would be a big problem for Paisas.  For some reason rain stops people from going out here.  I was not worried though because I had received some calls from friends who had assured me that they would be attending, so I knew it would be a good time regardless of how many people showed up.

By 7:30 p.m. the first Convo Club member showed up, Kevin.  Kevin is from the United States and has been to the past two Conversation Club Cocktail Parties.  Despite having taken a bus, walking in the rain, and stepping in a puddle, in true North American fashion, Kevin was on time.

For the next 30 minutes people trickle in groups of two and three.  By 8:00 p.m. there were about 30 people there.  I was very happy with this, so I told the bar owner to turn down the music and started the conversation activity at 8:15 p.m.

More people started to get there, and by 9:00 p.m. we had over 50 people.  At this point there were too many people to control and the music too loud, so I just let everyone chat on their own and abandoned the conversation activity.

My co-host Niall Moore and I had a great time.  Vertigo had set up a mini bar exclusively for our event.  We also had 25% discounts on all food and drinks (in spite of the discount prices were still pretty steep at Vertigo.)  Regardless, I saw many of my friends, and made a lot of new friends.  I am always happy to meet Paisas who are learning English and to meet foreigners that are living in Medellin.

Overall the event was a big success and as long as people keep showing up we will continue to put on these fun events.  Thank you to all who came!

Hello, my name is Andrew Macia and I am the founder of the Medellin Buzz.  I am an advanced level English teacher here in Medellin, and I also have a website development, and marketing company which I run from home.

My idea with the Medellin Buzz is to push those who are learning English and to motivate those who are considering the option of learning English here in Medellin. I love living in Medellin and I love Colombia.  I want to give back to the community and this is the best way I know how.  Let’s practice English/Spanish and have a great time!
